Environment - Best Practices

In China

We offer “milk-run” (multi-stop) delivery programs to collect goods from several suppliers and deliver to them to several customers using the same truck on the same route. This delivery model can achieve higher truck load efficiencies and minimise pollution by utilising fewer trucks.

In Hong Kong

We believe ecologically-conscious driving can reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. We provide driving guidance and training on eco-driving to drivers of our subcontractors and our own fleet to enhance their eco-driving skills and awareness. Through skills such as maintaining constant driving speed, avoiding excessive engine idling and choosing the most direct routes, we can improve our operations to contribute to cleaner – more breathable air.

In Japan

The amount of carbon emissions by newer model trucks and engines is significantly less than the older ones. The majority of the trucks we use to transport cargo in Japan are less than 5 years old. Newer vehicles help limit the release of carbon from our trucking operations. Some of the trucks are also powered by alternative fuels and some are hybrid trucks used for specific clients.

In the Netherlands

Since different transport modes emit different levels of carbon emissions. We actively promote modal shifting to our customers through which greener barge and rail services are utilised for inland transport instead of less eco-friendly truck operations.

In France

To reduce carbon emissions generated by forklifts during warehouse operations, OOCL Logistics uses 100% electric forklifts in our warehouse instead of those powered by LPG.

In Indonesia

To reduce electricity usage for lighting in the warehouse areas, we use transparent plastic roofing which allows natural light to come through during daytime.

In Japan

We compress and recycle 60-100kgs per month of plastic bags which are used during warehouse operations as well as recycling 10-20 tons cardboard boxes per month.

OOCL Logistics offices around the globe

We have established an energy saving policy, throughout or global office network, encouraging employees to switch off computers after work, power down copiers and lighting after use, maintain eco-friendly energy consumption temperatures for air conditioning and install energy-saving office equipment such as energy-efficient light bulbs. At the same time, all employees are encouraged to actively recycle used paper, plastic containers, aluminium cans and to conserve energy, water and paper.

All OOCL employees undertake basic training on environmental awareness, learning this core company value within the first few days on the job. This is an important part of the mandatory employee induction training delivered through the company’s ePeopleSmart learning platform.

In the USA

OOCL Logistics has adopted paperless operations to reduce the usage of toner and paper in vendor and customer processes.

In Hong Kong

Our Hong Kong offices were the first in the company to implement paperless archiving. Most commercial documents are received in electronic formats and then archived in the central data server. This minimises the use of paper, cardboard boxes and compact disks for physical storage. The same initiative is being implemented in our offices globally.

In Indonesia

We have requested that our transportation subcontractors to maintain their trucks in excellent condition, through measures such as regularly checking tire pressures, conducting smoke and emission tests and equipping trucks with fuel-efficient engines. We request that warehouse subcontractors use LED lights and electric forklifts in their warehouses and recycle and reuse warehouse materials.

In the Philippines

We conduct annual reviews of “green performance” for all of our subcontractors. These reviews include emission standards on trucks, types of fuels used, energy usage in warehouses and waste management plans.

In Thailand

We’ve even invited our subcontractors to join the green activities organised by our staff like tree plantings to enhance their environmental awareness and build community ecology awareness.

In Bangladesh

OOCL Logistics has organised activities, such as school visits annually, to promote green knowledge in the next generation. We creatively distributed small pots of plants to students in order to engage them in green activities and green habits.

In Sri Lanka

We regularly organise tree planting at schools for the visual and hearing impaired to help build not only a green school environment but also “green experiences” for the students themselves.

In Australia

We have initiated fund raising among staff with the donations going to an environmental charity dedicated to green development.
